Allen Samuel Private 6898
2nd Bn. South Staffordshire Regiment.
Born June 1885 in Wolverhampton son of Henry and Emma Allen, of York Street, Wolverhampton. In 1891 Samuel was living with his widowed mother (his father dying in September 1884) at 53 Duke Street along with his maternal grandparents Thomas and Hannah Read and his older brother Thomas. By 1901 Samuel was living with his mother, Thomas, and his grandmother Hannah along with his older married sister Clara Simpson and his nephew Thomas Roxen, Samuel was employed as a tin maker.
In March 1911 Samuel married Emma Mewton in Wolverhampton and they were living at No 3 Court, 3 House East Street, Wolverhampton, Samuel was employed as a 'detachable hub assembler'.
Samuel must have been a professional soldier as his medal roll index card records that he went to France 12th August 1914. At the time of his death his wife Emma was living at 12 Cobden Street, Blakenhall.
Killed in action 25th September 1915 aged 30.

William Antwis was born in Wolverhampton September 1890, the son of William and Mary. In 1901, they were living at 12 Derry Street, together with William’s brother, Thomas. William's mother died in March 1905 aged 57.
In 1911 William his father and brother Thomas were living at 19 Cockshutt Lane, Wolverhampton and were all employed as iron workers; William’s father died in June 1911 aged 61. William is remembered on the Monmoor & Victoria Works memorial so he will have been an employee there.
Killed in action 26th October 1917aged 27.

Ewart was born December 1898 in Wolverhampton, the son of George and Sarah Ann Barratt. in 1901 the family were living at 68 Curzon Street Blakenhall along with Ewart's older siblings Harry, Emily, Frank, and Ernest. By 1911 they were living at 91 Napier Road, Blakenhall. Ewart landed with his Battalion in France 5th March 1915.
Killed in action 27th May 1915 aged 16.

Samuel was born 25 November 1894 in Wolverhampton son of Isaac and Alice Winifred Beddows baptised 6th February 1895 at St. Matthew Church Wolverhampton. In 1901 they were living at 57 Pond Lane Blakenhall along with Sydney's older siblings John, Hugh, Neil, Roland, May, and Charlie. By 1911 they family were living at 134 Pond Lane and Sydney was employed as a labourer at an iron foundry.
Killed in Action 9th April 1915 aged 21.

Born June1888 in Banbury, son of George and Sara Beere, baptised 29th June 1888 at St. Mary Church, Banbury. In 1901 they were living at 54 Ranelagh Blakenhall along with Robert's older brothers Thomas and George and younger siblings Edward, Florence, Horace and Ernest. By 1911 the family were living at 63 Park St South, Blakenhall, George had left home and Thomas' wife Gertrude had joined them. Robert was employed as a screw cutter at an iron works.
Died in Sunderland 14th August 1916 aged 28.

George was born December 1896 in Wolverhampton son of Francis William and Sarah Ann Bishop. In 1901 they were living in South Street Blakenhall along with George's older siblings John, Ellen, Francis, and younger siblings Frederick and Annie. By 1911 George, his parents and Frederick were living at 26 Colden Lane, Blakenhall, and were joined by Eva. George was employed as a 'inker' at a boot factory.
Killed in action 14th March 1916 aged 20.

Herbert was born in June 1888 in Wolverhampton, the son of John Thomas and Anne Blower, baptised 28th June 1888 at St. Paul's Church Wolverhampton. In 1891 they were living at Ashford, Claverley, Shropshire, along with Herbert's older siblings Ester and Joseph and younger sister Jane. Herbert's father John died December 1894. By 1901 the family had returned to Wolverhampton and were living at No1 Court Penn Road.
By 1911 Herbert was a professional soldier and was serving with the 1st Bn. South Staffordshire Regiment. Herbert disembarked from the UK for France, 20th October 1914. At the time of Herbert's death his mother was living at 32, Derry St., Dudley Rd.
Died of wounds 12 November 1914 aged 26.

Born in 1893 in Tipton son of Alfred Henry and Annie Bott, baptised 5th February 1893 at St. Martin's, Church, Tipton. In 1901 they were living at 370 Whitehall Road, Great Bridge, West Bromwich along with Alfred's older sister Esther and younger sisters Beatrice and Nellie; Alfred's father was employed as a foreman builder. By 1911 the family remained living at 370 Whitehall Road but by then Alfred had moved to Wolverhampton as he was employed by the Post Office, the London Gazette dated 1st April 1910 reports Alfred being appointed a temporary assistant postman 23rd March 1910. At the time of Alfred's death his pension record reports that his mother was living at 30 Argyle Road Blakenhall Alfred left her £128 in his will.
Killed in action 28th November 1917.

Joseph was born in Sedgley in about 1896 son of Mary and Joseph Bolton. By 1901 Joseph's father had died and his mother remarried. Joseph was living at 30 Park Street, Blakenhall along with his mother Mary Page, stepfather John and his younger half-siblings Dora and John. By 1911 the family were living at 30 Park St. South, Blakenhall and had been joined by three more children Arnold, Muriel, and Evelyn. Joseph was employed as an apprentice to a cabinet maker. In 1913 he became a professional soldier joining the 1st Bn. South Staffordshire Regiment.
Died of wounds 11 January 1917 aged 21.

Richard was born in March 1886 in Wolverhampton son of Richard and Mary Bouckley, Mary died September 1898 aged 44. In 1901 Richard was living with his father and his siblings Thomas, Ethel and Polly at 177 Park Street Blakenhall, he was employed as a brewers clerk. By 1911 the family were living at 177 Park Street South, Blakenhall, and Richard was employed as a cycle salesman.
Killed in action 13th October 1915 when the Battalion was attacking the Hohenzollern redoubt, Loos.

George was born June 1885 in Wolverhampton son of Joseph and Agnes Bradney. In 1901 they were living at 62 Pearson Street Wolverhampton with George's brothers William, Charles, Arthur, and Edward; he was employed as an iron washer packer.
By 1911 George was a professional soldier and was based in India with his regiment, his parents were living at 14, Johnson St., Blakenhall, Wolverhampton.
Killed in action 26th September 1915 aged 30.

Born October 1885 in St George's, Salop, son of John Henry and Martha Carr baptised 15th November 1885 at St. George's methodist church, Wrockwardine, Salop. In 1891 they were living at 35 West Street barbers shop (John's father was a barber) along with John's siblings Enoch and Elizabeth and 15 year old Ernest Welsh who was a barber's apprentice. In 1901 the family remained at the same address and were joined by May, Samson, Thomas, Josiah, and Lydia. John was employed as a hairdressers assistant. By 1911 the family were living at 95 West Street, St Georges, and John was employed as a general labourer. In December 1915 John married Elsie Share in Wolverhampton.
Killed in action 28th September 1918 aged 33.

By the time of William's death his parents were living at 1 House, 23 Block, Thompson Avenue, Wolverhampton.

The 1911 census records Albert and Clara living at 29 Pond Lane, Blakenhall, with their four children Beatrice, Albert, Clara, and Elsie.
Albert was employed as a blacksmith, he left for Clara in his effects two pound eight shillings and sixpence.
Killed in action 22nd August 1915 aged 42.

Darby Albert Edward Private 203382

Albert was born in Wolverhampton in 1895 the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Henry Darby, who lived at 6 Phoenix Street, Blakenhall.
Albert, who worked at the Manders Brothers paint factory, joined the South Staffords at Wolverhampton in January 1916.
While serving in the Hulluch sector, he was severely wounded and was evacuated to an Advanced Dressing Station at Sains-en-Gohelle. He died of his wounds on 17 August 1917 aged 22.

Cecil Harry Davis MM Lance Corporal 43036

Cecil was born in Wolverhampton 1st November 1890, son of William Harry and Diana Davis.
Cecil was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the field - the Express & Star on 11 August 1917 reported "He went out of a trench and carried in a wounded despatch bearer and delivered the despatch. Subsequently he saw an officer about 10 yards out in the open, and carried him into safety."
Died of Wounds 13th October 1917 aged 26.

Percy was born in Exeter in 1898 son of Walter and Clara Diment, of 1 Chetwynd Rd, Blakenhall.
His service record records him living at 324 Dudley Road and being a clerk in holy orders before signing up 12th October 1914, he was just 17 years and 4 months old.
Killed in action during an enemy air raid, 22nd May 1918 aged 20.

Ebor was born in Wolverhampton in 1896, the son of Ebor and Elizabeth Ecclestone. In 1901 he was living with his parents at 159 Park Street, Wolverhampton, together with his brothers Arthur and John, and sister Beatrice.
He attended Wolverhampton Grammar School from 1908 until Easter 1911, when he went into banking. By 1911 the family had moved to White Hill, 140 Goldthorn Hill, Wolverhampton. Ebor had become an accountant’s clerk. He worked at Lloyd’s Bank in Wolverhampton and became a member of the Bankers’ Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers.
Ebor was killed in action 4 August 1916 aged 20.

Born in Wolverhampton in 1891 son of Catherine Egan, he married Nancy Price in Wolverhampton in 1913.
The 1911 census records him employed as a was a general labourer working for the Chromatographic Enamel Company.
William died of wounds 8th August 1915.

Ernest was born on 14 June 1895 in Bridgnorth, son of Ernest & Selina Elliot.
The 1911 census records Ernest living with his grandparents John and Ann Elliott at 31 Upper Villiers Street in Blakenhall and employed as an Assistant Librarian at Wolverhampton Free Library.
By the time the war started his parents were living at Holland House, Denton in Manchester.
Ernest died of wounds 1st October 1917.

Born 14th August 1893 in Guiseley, Yorkshire son of George F. and Elizabeth F. Ellis, of 65 Napier Rd, Wolverhampton.
The 1911 census records him living at 176 Steelhouse Lane, Wolverhampton with his parents and older brothers Walter and Albert, younger sister Agnes and younger brother James. Ernest was employed as a grocer’s errand boy.
At some point Ernest emigrated to Canada and on 26th September 1914 he enlisted into the Canadian Army. His attestation papers record him as being 5'2¼" tall with brown hair and blue eyes and being employed as a machinist.
Ernest died 9th April 1917 aged 20.

Arthur was born in 1893 in Bromyard, Herefordshire, son of Henry and Lyndonia Evans. The 1911 Census records Arthur living at Meadow Bank, West Malvern with his parents, his younger brother and sister William and Freda. He was employed as a grocer’s assistant. His father died in 1913.
Arthur married Clara Ling July 1915 in St. Luke's Church.
Killed in Action 18 October 1916.

Charles was born in 1889 in Wolverhampton son of Thomas and Jane Evans; he was educated at St Luke’s Schools, Blakenhall.
Charles married Jane Blower in 1913 in Wolverhampton. At the time of his death, she and their daughter Edith were living at 32 Derry St, Wolverhampton. Prior to enlisting he had been employed at Messrs Holcroft of Ettingshall.
He enrolled into the South Staffordshire Regiment 31st August 1914.
Died 12th July, 1916 of wounds he received 9th July 1916 aged 27.

Born March 1893 in Wolverhampton son of Frank and Elizabeth Fisher. In 1901, the family were living at 26 Maxwell Road, along with George's older brother Francis, and younger brothers Alec, Ernest, and Robert. George went to school at St George’s School, Bilston Street. By 1911 the family are living at 66 Herrick St, Wolverhampton and are joined by three more brothers Alexander, Sidney, and Cyril. George was employed as bakers carter. He worked for Sunbeam Motor Company, and later became a baker, working for Mrs Gregory of Compton Road.
At the time of George’s death his parents were living at 54, Johnson St., Blakenhall

William was born in Wolverhampton in 1896, the son of William John and Betsy Ann Fletcher.
His mother died and his father remarried in 1906 to Mabel Fallon. The 1911 census records William and his family living at 119 Upper Villiers Street.
William was employed as a warehouseman in the hardware industry.
William enlisted in the Lincolnshire Regiment 1st October 1916; he became ill and died in the 4th Northern General Hospital in Lincoln on 7th March 1917.

John was employed as a blacksmith's striker.
John married Lily May Bentley in Wolverhampton October 1915.
Died of illness 1st July 1918 in the 46th Stationary Hospital aged 27.

William married Mary Ann Jones March 1913 in Wolverhampton.
Died 16th May 1919 in Colchester, Essex aged 30.

Arthur was born in Wolverhampton in 1892, the son of Tom and Mary Harriman. The 1911 census records Arthur living with his parents at 137 Dudley Road, Wolverhampton. Arthur was employed as a cycle fittings maker.
Arthur was awarded the Military Medal and Gazetted 19th September 1917.
Killed in action 16th October 1917 aged 25.

Son of William and Annie Harris baptised at St. Luke's Church 23rd August 1893. The 1911 census records Stanley living at Southleigh, Goldthorn Hill, Wolverhampton with his parents, older sister Muriel and his Uncle William Perry. Stanley was employed as a fitter.
Stanley died of typhoid 11th September 1918 aged 25.

Born January 1887 in Wolverhampton son of John Richard and Hannah Hartill, of Blakenhall, Wolverhampton; the 1911 census records Hubert living at 677 Parkfield Road, Wolverhampton with his mother, two older brothers Albert and William and a younger sister Elsie. Hubert's father died in 1917.
Hubert married Annie Ethel Furness 1st December 1912 in Wolverhampton they had a son Hubert born 1912.
Hubert died of wounds in a German Prisoner of War Camp 8th April 1918 aged 34.

Heath Frank Albert Private 421169

Born June 1889 in Wolverhampton son of Albert Huxley and Sarah Harriet Heath. They were living at 83 New Zoar Street Wolverhampton with Franks older siblings, Alfred, Florance, Bertha, Ernest, Maggie, Hollie, Elsie, and Herbert. The family by 1901 were living at 28 Sedgley Street Blakenhall and joined by another child Arthur. Frank's mother Sarah died December 1909 aged 57. In 1911 Frank was living at 73 Lower Villiers St, Blakenhall with his father and siblings Ernest, Margaret, Howard, Elsie, and Arthur. Frank was employed as an auctioneer's clerk.
At the beginning of the war Frank joined the Army 3rd September 1914 and landed in France 4th March 1915.
Frank died 1.20pm, 12 October 1917 aged 27 in York Military hospital of an abscess of connective tissue in his back.

Born 24th March 1898 in Wolverhampton son of John and Beatrice Highway. The 1911 census records that he was living at 74 Fowler Street, Wolverhampton, with his parents and older brother Frank older sisters Bertha and Florence and younger brother James; Harold was attending St Peter’s Collegiate School and passed the Oxford Preliminary Local Examination in 1911.
Prior to enlisting he was living with his parents at 24 Fowler St Blakenhall and was employed as a clerk at the Chillington Tool company, a letter (in his service record) from the company dated 25th October 1915 states that Harold is free to leave the company as long as he joins a branch of his Majesty's forces. Harold enlisted 25th October 1915. he arrived in Mesopotamia present day Iraq 24th October 1916.
Harold died of typhus 5th May 1918 aged 20.

Born in 1891 in Wolverhampton baptised 24th September 1899 in St. Luke's Church son of John and Beatrice Highway. The 1911 census records that he was living at 74 Fowler Street, Wolverhampton, with his parents and younger sisters Bertha and Florence and younger brothers Harold and James. He was employed as an order clerk.
Killed in action 18th April 1918.

Born in 1890 in Sedgley, son of Frederick and Sarah Hill. The 1911 census records Frederick living at 27 Poplar St. Nlakenhall with his parents and his five younger siblings Elsie, Arthur, Florence, Leonard and Harold.
Frederick was employed at this time as an assistant butcher.
Frederick married Florence Elfreda Huband January 1918 in West Bromwich at the time of his death Florence was living at The Gables’, Hydes Road, Wednesbury.
Died of wounds 7th October 1918 aged 28.

Born in Wolverhampton in 1898 son of William and Caroline Hill. In 1911 Henry was living at 403 Dudley Road, Wolverhampton with his parents and younger brothers William, Reginald and Ernest.
Killed in action 1st July 1916 attacking Gommecourt aged 19.

Born in September 1889 in Sedgley son of John and Mercy Hill. In 1901 they were living King Street Sedgley, by 1911 they were living at 48 Byrne Road Blakenhall and John was joined by his siblings George, Lucy, Elizabeth, and Mercy.
John enlisted into the Army 30th January 1917 aged 18 he was 5' 7” tall and of good physical development, he was still living at 48 Byrne Road and was now employed as a stamper.
Killed in action 25th April 1918.

Joseph was born in Wolverhampton 1889 son of Joseph and Georgina Holmes, his mother died in 1899.
In 1901 Joseph was living at 261 Bilston Road, Wolverhampton with his father, older brother William, younger sisters Daisy and Dora and grandmother Mary Ann Holmes.
By the 1911 census Joseph had enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment and was the rank of corporal
Joseph was wounded sometime around the 9th September and died of his wounds in the 3rd General Hospital, Le Treport 28 September 1915 aged 31.

Born 18 April 1891 in Wolverhampton son of George and Sarah Hopley
The 1901 census records George living with his widowed mother and younger sisters Florence and Beatrice in the St. Johns area of Wolverhampton.
George joined the Great Western Railway Company 5th November 1906 but was dismissed a year later 29 November 1907.
By the 1911 census George had enlisted into the South Staffordshire Regiment.
He was killed in action during the first battle of Ypres 7 November 1914 aged 24. At the time of his death his mother was living at of 38 Moor St., Blakenhall.

Horobin Howard Private 147385

Born 11th July 1890 in Wolverhampton son of Thomas Cyrus and Sarah Horobin in 1891 they were living at 9 Franchise Street, Blakenhall along with his older sisters Harriet and Gertrude and his sixteen-year-old aunt Gertrude Horobin, his father was employed as a 'packer'. By 1901 the family remained at 9 Franchise Street, Blakenhall and Howard was joined by younger siblings William, Elsie, Albert, and Alfred their father was now employed as a holloware packer.
Howard emigrated to Canada arriving in Halifax Nova Scotia 20th May 1910. By 1911 Howard's parents were living at 20 Knox Road Blakenhall.
Howard enlisted into the Canadian Army at Winnipeg, Manitoba 2nd July 1915, he was 25 years old 5'4" tall with a fair complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, and employed as a printer.
Howard married Elizabeth (Bessie) Dowling 20th November 1915 in Winnipeg. Elizabeth was born 16th March 1895 in Kilburn, London, England, she had emigrated to Canada with her family when she was eleven years old leaving England 4th July 1906; her father was a famer. Howard and Elizabeth's home address was 535 Maryland Street Winnipeg.
Howard travelled to England from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada aboard the S.S. Empress of Britain arriving 29th May 1916, he embarked for France 12th August 1916. Howard had ten days leave in England from 15th September 1917.
Howard was killed 30th October 1917 during operations south of Passchendaele, while acting as Headquarters' runner he had proceeded about 100 yards from Battalion headquarters with a dispatch for Battalion Transport Lines when he was killed by the explosion of an enemy shell that landed close by.

In 1911 Frederick was living at 37 Arthur Street, Wolverhampton with his parents and his younger siblings Herbert, John, Cyril and Francis.
Fredrick was employed as a boot trade machinist.
Killed in action 1st July 1916.

Jones Benjamin James Gunner 80312

Benjamin was born 21st April 1897 in Bridgnorth son of Francis and Sarah Jones, he was baptised at St Mary Magdalene Church 15th May 1897.
In 1911 Benjamin was living with his parents at 412 Dudley Road, Wolverhampton with older siblings Mabel, Maud and Herbert and younger sisters Frances, Susan and Phylis. At this time Benjamin was 13 and still at school, his father was employed as a bricklayer.
Benjamin enlisted 21st February 1916 aged 18 at Great Yarmouth, his attestation papers record that he was employed as a salesman for J. Morris and sons and still living with his parents at 412 Dudley Road, Wolverhampton.
Benjamin landed in France 13 September 1916; he was posted to the 81st Siege Battery 10th June 1917. Killed in action 23rd July 1917 aged 20.

Robert was born December 1887 in Wolverhampton son of Joseph and Elizabeth Jones. In 1891 they were living at 12 Chapel Street Blakenhall along with Robert's older brother Joseph and younger brother Reuben. Robert's mother died December 1897, in 1901 the family were living at the same home, and were joined by younger sisters Elizabeth and Ann; Robert was employed as an edge tool worker. In 1911 all the family were still together at 12 Chapel Street, Robert was now employed as a 'bottler' at a local brewery

Born in 1894 in Wolverhampton son of John and Charlotte, in 1901 he was living with his parents and older siblings Fred, William, Mary, Annie, Fannie and Eliza at 6 Jeddo Street. By 1911 he was living with his brothers Fred and William at No 4 Court No 1 House, Ablow Street, Wolverhampton and was employed as a 'bobber' - metal polisher.
He landed in France 27 December 1914 and died 7th April 1919

He volunteered and joined the Army 25th November 1914 in Wolverhampton. His attestation papers record his employment as a 'slater' and still living at 31 Hawthorne Road, Blakenhall.
Killed in action 15th September 1916 aged 22.

Born about 1897 in Darlington, Durham, son of Samuel and Margaret Jane Knight. In 1911 Samual was living with his parents and three younger siblings Alfred, Lettica and Obadiah at 43 Brown St, Wolverhampton. He was employed as a labourer at Bayliss Jones and Bayliss, Monmoor Green Steel Works, Wolverhampton.
Killed in action 16th July 1916 aged 20.

Born June 1896 in Wolverhampton son of George and Lucy Lawley, he was the youngest of nine children, his siblings were Annie, Nellie, Amy, George, John, Stepehen, Lucy and Edward.
William volunteered and joined the Army at Wolverhampton 29th October 1915 aged 22, he was living with his parents at 5 Johnson Stret and was employed as a tin smith.
Killed in action 3rd June 1916 aged 23.

Born about 1893 in Wolverhampton son of Enoch and Amy Lee. In 1911 Albert was living with his parents and older sister Elsie, younger siblings Ada and Enoch at 54 Johnson St, Wolverhampton.
He was employed as an assistant engineer attendant at Mander Brothers paint factory.
Albert enlisted in the 6th Battalion in October 1914; he was severely wounded in September 1915 while serving in the line in the Hill 60 sector. He was evacuated to hospital but died of his wounds 3rd September 1915 aged 23.

Born 14 February 1896 at Walsall son of Thomas and Sarah Leighton,in 1911 Thomas was living at 23 Johnson Street, Wolverhampton with his parents, older sisters Rebecca and Dorothy and younger brothers Horace, Leonard and Ernest; he was employed as a errand boy.
Thomas married Emily Turner October 1916 in Wolverhampton.
Thomas died of wounds 4th December 1917, he left to Emily in his will £6 16 shillings and 10 pence.

Arthur enlisted into the Army 6th January 1905 prior to this he was employed as a brass polisher.
Killed in action 28th October 1914.

Cyril was born in October 1887 in Solihull, the son of Alfred Thomas and Mary Alice Littleford.
The 1911 census records Cyril living with his parents, paternal grandmother, and younger sister Violet at 4 Watermoor Road, Cirencester and employed as an 'assistant in business.'
Cyril later spent some time in British Guiana working on sugar plantations, before returning to Liverpool in July 1915. At some point his parents moved to live in Wolverhampton.
Cyril died of illness or accident in Ripon Military Hospital 26th August 1915 aged 26.

Born 17 February 1878 in Wolverhampton son of William and Sarah Mason, living at 58 Johnson Street, Dudley Road.
On 18 March 1915 H.M.S. "Inflexible was trying to suppress Turkish guns so that minefields could be swept. Unfortunately, the return fire was heavy, with a number of shells hitting the ship, killing or wounding many on board, unfortunately William was one of them he was buried at sea and is remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial Panel 10.

Born in Liverpool in 1887 son of William and Rosina Massey, he had two older siblings Florence and William and a younger brother Percy. Alfred married Ellen Ethel Lowder December 1907 in Wolverhampton.
Although his parents and siblings remained living in Wolverhampton Alfred and Ellen are recorded in the 1911 census as boarding at 60 Prescot St Liverpool, and Alfred employed as a travelling photographer. He does however return to Stafford to enlist.

Francis was born 1868 in Birmingham son of Patrick and Caroline Mee; he married Rose Hannah Broadbent in 1907 in Birmingham.
In 1911Francis was living with Hannah and their 13-year-old daughter Dorothy at 4 Phoenix St, Dudley Road, Wolverhampton from where he enlisted. Francis was recorded as being an Army pensioner and employed as a timekeeper at a hollow-ware and general iron foundry.
Francis joined the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1886 aged 18 years, he left the Army 23rd April 1908 re-joining at the beginning of the war.
Killed in action 22nd August 1915 aged 47.

At the time of Ben's death his parents as the licensee were living at The Victoria Inn, Bell Place, Wolverhampton.
Ben was killed in action 27 September 1915 aged 20.

By the time of his death James had married Ellen Morris and was living at 60, Arthur St., Wolverhampton.
James died of wounds 23rd August 1918 aged 33.

He married Lillie Bott in 1913 in Wolverhampton.

The 1901 cansus records the family living at 7B Lower Villiers Street, at some period John worked for Mander Brothers as he is remembered on the Mander Bros War Memorial.
On 5 October 1914, John enlisted into the Army his home address was recorded as being 180 Waterloo Road, Wolverhampton and he was employed as a warehouseman
John was killed in action 25 September 1917.

The 1911 census records him living at 'Adelaide Villa' 273 Dudley Road, Wolverhampton with his mother, maternal grandmother whose home it was, his aunt and his older siblings William and Emma; he was employed as a clerk in an insurance office. The Midland Counties Express newspaper recorded on 30th October 1915 that he worked as a clerk in the Wolverhampton Corporation Borough Accountant’s department, his brother was also serving in the Army
Charles landed in France 5th March 1915 and was killed in action 13 October 1915.

The 1911 census records Samuel living at 152, Caledonia St., Steelhouse Lane, Wolverhampton with his parents, older brothers James and John and younger siblings Charles, Daniel, George, Phoebe and Joseph. Samuel was employed as a fishmonger’s assistant.
Killed in action 14th June 1917 aged 24.

Born in 1892 in Gornal son of Samuel and Leah Parkes baptised 31st July at St. Andrew's, Walsall. The 1911 census records John living at 19 Park Street South, Wolverhampton with his parents, older brother Fredrick and younger siblings Samuel, Gladys, Dora, Rueben, Clara, Ernest, Florence and Leonard. John was employed as a whitesmith - a person who works with "white" or light-coloured metals such as tin and pewter.
In April 1915, he enlisted into the Army On 10 August 1917, he became a Corporal. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery which was announced in the London Gazette on 28 September 1917 and in the Express & Star on 3 November 1917.

Albert died of wounds 17th April 1918 aged 21.

Born September 1895 in Wolverhampton son of John and Ellen Perks. In 1901 they were living at 56 Hawthorn Road, Blakenhall along with Arthur's older brothers John, Leonard, Harvey, and Cyril. By 1911 the family were living at 342 Dudley Road, Wolverhampton and Arthur was employed as a shop assistant. Arthur's father John died September 1917 aged 57.
Arthur was killed in action 23rd September 1917.

Charlie was born in Wolverhampton in 1891, the son of Charles and Harriet Perry. The 1911 census records, them living at 65 Byrne Road, Blakenhall with his siblings Henry, Harriet, Lily May and Doris. Charlie was a clerk for a motor works. He later worked as a clerk for Messrs. Bussey, wholesale grocers, of Bilston, as well as being the manager of the Electric Picture Palace at Bloxwich. He was a member of the choir at St Paul’s Church, Wolverhampton, and at St Luke’s Mission, Dudley Road.
Killed in action 21st April 1917,when he was hit by a German shell while crossing an open field to the trenches.

By 1901 the family had moved to Cobden Street Blakenhall, and were joined by Frank's younger siblings Elsie, Harold and Gladys.
The 1911 census records Frank living at 6 Elm Farm Road, with his widowed mother and siblings Samuel, William, Elsie, Harold and Gladys. Frank was employed as a cabinet maker.

Knight, sisters Mary and Margaret, and brothers William, Thomas and Ernest. He attended Dudley Road Council School. In 1911, they are at the same address, together with John’s brothers Richard and Ernest Walter, and his niece, Beatrice Knight. John was employed as a packer of hollowware at an iron works. He enlisted in September 1914.

In 1911 the family were living at 41 Park Street and were joined by two more younger siblings Edith and Arthur. George was employed as an 'edge tool grinder'. George married Fanny James December 1911 in Wolverhampton.

Percy was employed as a coach painter. At the time of his death the family were living at 15, Napier Rd., Blakenhall, Wolverhampton.

The 1911 census records Charles living at 265 Fletchers Row Alfreton, Derbyshire with a relative, he was employed as a general labourer at a foundry.

Born in Wolverhampton 22nd December 1887 son of Arthur and Harriet Shinton, he was baptised at St. Luke’s Church 12th February 1888.
In 1891 the family were living at 13 Ranelagh Road, Blakenhall along with Frank's older siblings Ellen and Arthur and his younger sister Lily. By 1901 the family had moved to 18, Wanderers Avenue, Blakenhall. Frank's older siblings had left home but by then he had three more siblings Claude, Sydney and Eveleyn. His father was employed as a brewers clerk.
The family remained at 18, Wanderers Avenue, Blakenhall, the 1911 census records Frank as being employed as a railway clerk.
Frank enlisted into the Army 15th November 1915; at this time, he remained employed as a clerk. Frank was put onto the Reserve list and was eventually called up 20th September 1916; he went into the African theatre of war 9th March 1917. Frank transferred his experience of being a clerk into the Army where he was employed as a ledger clerk for the motor spare parts.
Frank died 5th June 1918 aged 28 at the 84th General Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania of haemorrhagic smallpox.

Born 1881 at 39 Brick Kiln Street Wolverhampton son of Ellen and Henry, baptised 5th April 1881 at St. Mark's Church Wolverhampton. In 1901 the family were living at 51 Bloomsbury Street along with James older sister Ellen and younger siblings Ernest, Benjamin and Ethel. By 1911 the family were living at 30 Peel Street and were joined by younger children William and Florence. James was employed as a general labourer.
His military record records him living in Blakenhall at the time of his enlistment.
Killed in action 17th April 1917.

Southall Albert Private 12946

Born 1883 in Wolverhampton the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Southall, in 1891 they were living at 113 Pond Lane, Wolverhampton along with Albert's older siblings Fanny, Frederick, William, Ada and Ann and his younger siblings Maude, Louisa and Harry. By 1901 the family had moved to 102 Shaw Road, Blakenhall and all Albert's older siblings but William had moved on, however they were joined by three more children Walter, Thomas and Ernest. Albert was employed as a 'house plasterer'.
In the summer of 1909 Albert married Mary-Ann Rowley in Wolverhampton and in 1911 they were living at 15 Chapel Street, Blakenhall. They had three children Charles aged 3, Joseph aged 2 and Sidney who was six months old. Albert was still employed as a plasterer.
At the time of Albert's enlistment, the family were living at 46 Cross street south, Blakenhall, he left £9 in his soldiers effects to Mary.
Killed in action 10th July 1916.

Son of Frederick and Alice Sparrow, in 1901 the family along with John's younger sister Violet were living at 69 Knox Road, Blakenhall. In 1911 the family remained at the address and John was employed as a painter. In the summer of 1915 John married Alice Groves at Christ Church, Stafford sadly Alice died March 1917 in Stafford.
Died of wounds 17th June 1917 aged 25.

Born 1894 in Shifnal son of Frank and Margaret Stainer; in 1901 they were living at 52 Derry Street Blakenhall with Harry's younger sisters Hilda and Winifred. In 1911 the family remained living at the same address joined by two more children Cicily and Frederick, Harry was employed as a printer.
Died 13th December 1916.

Born in 1886 in Wolverhampton son of Henry and Leah Steadman, in 1891 they were living at 52 Franchise Street, Blakenhall along with Harold's older siblings Mary, Lily, Louisa, Stephen, Richard and Harry. By 1901 the family was living at 9 Hall Street Blakenhall, there was only Harold, Harry and a new sibling Ethel living with their parents. The 1911 census records Harold living at 35 Cobdon Street Blakenhall with his older sister Mary and her daughter Violet, Harold was employed as a cabinet locksmith.
Harold married Maud Barlow September 1914 in Wolverhampton.
Killed in action 21st May 1918 aged 32.

Stubbs Francis Wibberley Done Serjeant 44277

Born 7th May 1886 in Penkridge son of William and Elizabeth Stubbs baptised 30th May 1886 at St. Mary Church Stafford. In 1891 they were living at 67 St.Thomas Farm Hopton and Coton, Staffordshire along with
Francis' older siblings Joseph, William, Ernest, George and Elizabeth and younger sister Nora and their cousin William; also living in the house was a Governess, a domestic servant and a farm labourer. By 1901 the family were living at Whiston Hall, Whiston, Penkridge; another son Eric had been born.
In 1911 Francis was living with his brother Ernest at 118 Waterloo Road, Wolverhampton and was employed as an electrician.
Francis married Margaret Vaughan June 1915 in Wolverhampton, at the time of his death they were living at Ivy House Whiston, Penkridge, he left £142 to Margaret in his soldiers effects. I don't believe that Francis ever lived in Blakenhall however, the war pension records state that Margaret was living at 139 Penn Street Wolverhampton, she may well have attended St. Luke’s Church which is why Francis' name is recorded on the memorial.
Killed in action 26th September 1915.

Tebbutt Hubert Caldicott Lance Corporal 07159

Born in 1896 in Wolverhampton and baptised at St Luke Church 10th May 1896 son of William Thomas and Frances Cecilia Tebbutt. In 1901 they were living at 44, Cross St. South, Blakenhall with Hubert's older brother Raymond, younger sister Dorothy, and his widowed maternal grandmother Harriet Caldicott. By 1911 the family including his grandmother remained at the same address, sadly his sister Dorothy had died in 1906; Hubert was employed as a 'accountant clerk'.
Hubert died 2nd January 1919 aged 22 in the 52nd General Hospital, Salonika. He left £21 from 'his soldiers effects' to his father.

Born 23rd January 1897 in Wolverhampton son of Thomas and Mary Titley baptised 14th February 1897 at Christ Church Wolverhampton. In 1901 they were living at 20 Oxley Street, Wolverhampton along with Frank's older siblings Thomas, Fanny, and Eliza. By 1911 they remained at the same address Frank was employed 'tapping nuts' for the cycle components trade.
Frank was wounded during action 10th November 1916, there is no record available to say what happened afterwards whether he carried on serving or was invalided out.
Died 13th April 1919.

Turley Ben Private 20263

Born June 1877 in Wolverhampton son of George and Martha Turley. In 1881 they were living at 37 Derry Street, Wolverhampton with Ben's older siblings Louisa and Harry and younger brothers George and Frank. By 1891 the family had moved to Franchise Street, Blakenhall and Ben had a younger sister Kate, their father George died in March 1889 aged 47. The 1901 census records Ben living with his sister Louisa, her husband Joseph and their brothers Frank and George at 12, Arthur Street, Wolverhampton; Ben was employed as an electrical engineer.
In March 1907 Ben married Sarah Ann Louisa Sneyd in Wolverhampton and by 1911 they were living at 20 Shaw Road, Blakenhall, with their two-year-old son Harry; Ben was employed as a house painter
Killed in action 10th April 1917 aged 39.

Born 25th November 1888 in Wolverhampton son of Thomas and Sarah Jane Walker. In 1891 they along with Joseph's older sister Elsie were living at 41 Franchise street Blakenhall by 1901 there were three more children Elsie, Louisa and Sidney; Sarah's parents Thomas and Martha were also living with them. In 1911 the family remained living at the same address, the oldest child Elsie and Sarah's parents were no longer living with them and another child Cicily had been born two years earlier; Joseph was now employed as a cycle machinist.
Joseph died of wounds 22nd May 1915.

Ward Jeremiah Private 7133
'A' Company 2nd Bn. South Staffordshire Regiment
Born 25th April 1885 in Wolverhampton son of Jeremiah and Ann Ward. In 1891, they were living at 95 Dudley Road along with Jeremiah's older sisters Lillie, Eliza and Priscilla and younger brothers Hezekiah and Stephen. By 1901 the family were living at 1 Cobden Street Blakenhall and the remaining children at home, Jeremiah, Hezekiah and Stephen, are joined by Charlotte, along with their cousins Margaret and Stephen A. Bennett. Jeremiah is employed as a pit winder at a local colliery.
Jeramiah married Mary Ann E. Ellitts in 1907 in Wolverhampton their son Jeremiah was born in December 1909 in Wolverhamptonand their daughter Eva 21st April 1910. In 1911 the family were living at 73 Devonshire Street Shirebrook, Nottinghamshire along with Jeremiah's brother Hezekiah and his wife Louisa. Jeremiah was employed as a miner hewer. Jeramiah and Mary Ann's third child Leslie was born 21st November 1913 in Hemsworth, Yorkshire where there was a very large colliery. At some time as yet unknown Jeramiah had joined the Army and was a reservist re-joining at the outbreak of war, he and his family had returned to live in Zoar Street Wolverhampton.
Jeremiah died of wounds 24th October 1914 which he received the day before when his Company took part in a counterattack at Pilkem.

Watkins George William Private 53758
2nd/5th Bn. West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own).
Born in Birmingham on 24th September 1899, the son of George and Florence Watkins. In 1901 they were living at Whittington, Pershore. By 1911 they were living at 12 Glanmor Terrace, Burry Port, Carmarthenshire and were joined by George's younger siblings Alfred, Leonard, William and Florence.
George enlisted into the West Yorkshire Regiment 10th September 1917, at that time he was employed as a farm labourer and living at 2 Goldthorn Hill, Wolverhampton.
In August 1918 George spent some time in No. 8 General Hospital with trench fever, due to the illness he was given three weeks leave 15th August to 5th September 1918.
It was reported in Express & Star of 7th September 1918 that while in hospital George had donated a pint of blood to save the life of a sergeant in the next bed, unfortunatley in vain. Before he returned to France, he was presented with a silver wrist watch and a wallet, subscribed for by the members of the Bilston Brotherhood.
After returning to France George was admitted on 11th September 1918 to No.11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen and died of pneumonia 17th September 1918. His wallet, wrist watch and two cigarette cases were returned to his parents.

Born June 1893 in Wolverhampton son of George William and Annie Amelia Watkiss. In 1901 they were living along with Chris’ younger siblings Lily, Daisy and Viktor at 26 Court Lower Street Wolverhampton the home of Chris' maternal grandmother Adelaide Brindley, his mother's brothers Christopher and George also lived there. Chris' father was employed as a railway engine driver.
By 1911 Chris' family were living in their own home at 36 1/2 Cross Street South, Blakenhall, they were joined by Chris' younger siblings Elsie, George, Alice and Thomas; Chris was employed as locksmith with a lock and safe manufacturer.
Admitted to No.3 Casualty Clearing Station, Caudry from 1/1st (East Lancashire) Field Ambulance, died of influenza 19th November 1918 aged 25. II. A. 7. Caudry British Cemetery France.

Whitehead Samuel George Lance Corporal 9138

Born 31st July 1894 in Walsall son of George and Emma Whitehead, baptised 15th August 1894 at St. George Church, Walsall. In 1901 they along with Samuel's older sister Florence were living at 60 Stafford Street Wolverhampton. By 1911 the family were living at 64, Byrne Rd., Blakenhall, Florence had left, and they were joined by a younger sister Gladys. Samuel was employed as an engine cleaner he had joined the Great Western Railway company two months earlier on 28th February 1911 leaving the employment 23rd April 1912.
